Noelle Layne knows horror. Every trope, every warning sign, every survival tactic. She even leads a successful movie club dedicated to the genre. Thus, who better to throw the ultimate, most exclusive Halloween party on all of Long Island?

And with the guest list including the coolest kids in her senior class, her popularity is bound to spike. Hopefully, enough to warrant an expansion into podcasting. Plus, the fact that attractive, singer-songwriter Archer Mitchell is coming is honestly the candy corn on top. Nothing is going to kill her party vibes.

Except…maybe the low-budget It clown she hires to lead a classic round of tag. He’s supposed to be terrifying, though in a comforting, nostalgic way. Instead, the guy is giving major creeps. But maybe Noelle’s just that good at hosting?

Her confidence is immediately rocked when the night’s entertainment axes one of her guests. And he's not done yet. If an evil, murderous clown thinks life is a game, then Noelle is ready to play. She’s been waiting a long time to prove that she’s a Final Girl.

🧠My Quick Thoughts

🔍How I Found The Book

I was looking up random horror books on Amazon and this one seemed like a good premise.

📖Book in 3 Sentences

1. Noelle and all the teens suck

2. Everyone is rich and/or famous and spoiled

3. The clown also sucks but is the best character

🤔Thoughts

- Noelle is not very likeable. Well... no one is actually likeable. I disliked every single character.

- I don’t like the heavy influencer aspect of the other teenage characters, like one being an Instagram model and another being a rock star from TikTok - it all seems quite pretentious and shallow. Which maybe was a point? I am not sure. I was rooting for the clown.

- The actions scenes were incredibly boring.

- The pacing of the book seemed off to me.

- Why didn't they attack the clown when he was taking a literal shit in a bag??

💗Who Would Enjoy This

Maybe teenagers? I honestly can’t say since I disliked it.

If I didn’t have this book as a bingo read, I would have DNF’d it. I honestly have nothing nice to say about it. This is one of the few books I’ve ever read where I didn’t have any quotes to record.

‼️Mild spoilers below ‼️

The main character was so unlikable and preachy. She is a student at a prep school full of popular social media stars and rich kids. She’s also rich and wants to be a writer/Director when she gets out of school. She’s the leader of a horror movie fan club and throws a party and invites all the most well off and influential students from school. She does this to use the others to promote her club and to advertise an upcoming podcast she wants to start.

She hires a clown to play a game of scary tag to go on theme with her horror themed party. Long story short, the clown starts killing everyone. The action scenes are boring and slow, and I found it hard to keep up with where the characters were in the McMansion they were in. The dialogue is cringe. None of the characters are likable (which, to be fair, might be on purpose). The clown shits in a Birkin bag and the main character and her rockstar love interest just watch.  Did I mention that every student is some social media influencer or model or rock star or hyper successful douche at the tender ages of 17/18? Every single person was unlikeable!

Honestly… I was rooting for the clown the entire time.
