A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

🧠My Quick Thoughts

🔍How I Found The Book

A previous friend of mine bought this for me in the spring of 2023.

📖Book in 3 Sentences

- The world has come to an end where firestorms ravish the land

- The man and his son are making their way along a road to the ocean

- The man's love for the boy determines all of his behavior, all the way until the end

🤔Thoughts

No chapters and no quotes when people talk - interesting to read

- Caught myself skimming some of this, as it was a lot of the same thing for most of the book

- I wonder what was ailing the man

- I wonder how old the boy is

💗Who Would Enjoy This

People who like slow burn post apocalyptic stories.

My goodness this was a sad book. The man and his son trying to make it in such a bleak and terrible existence made me physically uncomfortable. Though I will admit I did have to skim a small part of the book as I was getting bored with the same thing over and over, but I think that was part of the plot. It is the same thing... over and over... just to survive. The cold, the ash, the hunger, the thirst - that is all that is to their life and all that will be forever. The infant scene shocked me. The ending made me cry. The boy is far too sweet for a world like that.
